Motivation Is What Keeps Me Going & Helps Me Help Others!

Motivation is the power bank that charges me to perform well, drive outstanding results and remain consistent. Most people misunderstand that money is the biggest motivation which means if you increase the monetary benefit, the motivation to perform will increase too. Even though it is not entirely true, I cannot ignore the fact that money does play a significant role, but only in the beginning. It is not a long-term motivation that can drive results. As a business coach, it is vital for me to stay motivated because I cannot afford otherwise.

What motivates people to work better?

When I dug deeper into the science of motivation, I learned there is a lot to it than I knew. There are several reasons including recognition, money, power, meaning, etc. These factors can have a great influence on the overall productivity of a business coach like me, but the core of motivation differs from person to person. To understand what truly motivates me and people in general, I decided to ask myself a few things.

  • How do we attain motivation?
  • What are the things that truly stimulate better performance and consistency?
  • How do we lose motivation?
  • Is it possible to remain constantly motivated?

The Puzzle Of Motivation by Dan Pink (TED TALK)

I admire career analyst and one of the world’s best thought leaders, Dan Pink for his popular TED talk where he discusses the puzzle of motivation in reference to the knowledge of social scientists. He has expertise in the subject and has invested a lot of time in the field. During his research, he conducted several experiments to understand the layers of motivation. However, during his TED talk, he referred to Dan Ariely’s research where he denounced money as the “biggest motivator.”

The Flawed Rewarding Methodology

Pink rightly pointed out that there is something inherently wrong with the if-then rewarding methodology to induce motivation. He said, money does not define motivation, and it actually, destroys creativity within the work domain. Once you associate your stimulation to work with money, the real essence of growth diminishes.

What Is The Intrinsic Drive?

As already established, money is not a consistent motivation so, the question is what truly is the biggest motivator? According to science, the unseen intrinsic drive is the core of motivation. It is the urge to do things because they matter, for their own sake. I feel rewards can never replace the intrinsic drive. Contrary to the old definition, money does not resonate with the truly important things in life. If I am feeling overwhelmed or demotivated at work, I try to focus on the things that truly matter; a sense of gratification at the end of the day, or a feeling of fulfilling a purpose.

Understanding The Importance Of Intrinsic Motivation For Business Coaches

As a business coach, every day, I have a lot going on. There are a lot of things to think about and act upon. Sometimes it is so overwhelming that I lose the motivation to get going. Due to the overwhelming amount of work, this job demands a highly simulative drive to render consistency and productivity. To get answers, I researched intrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic motivation is the behavior that is fueled by inner gratification. This means you do something because you want to earn the internal rewards and a sense of fulfillment. To describe the idea, let’s say this is the behavior that is provoked from within to satisfy your natural instincts. I do what I do for myself, and not to earn some extra cash or a monetary benefit.

The Science of Intrinsic Motivation

Psychology tells us that there is a difference between internal and external awards. According to a definition, intrinsic motivation is possible when we do something without obvious rewards in mind. We do things because of our natural, instinctive urges to explore, learn, and actualize our potential. For example, learning a skill, or game simply because you want to.

Consider having a one-on-one session with the client. Am I doing it because of my interest, or only because of the monetary benefit? Obviously, money is essential but not the sole reason. I do it because it gives me a sense of fulfilment, and gratification.

Most business coaches make three major mistakes

Business coaching is a creative endeavor, but it is also hectic. It takes a lot of energy to be on top of the game all the time. However, these are the three main problematic elements that recede motivation on a good day to work.

  1. Associating success and productivity to the income generated.
  2. Relying on comparisons with their counterparts.
  3. Confining accomplishment to only the occasions when you put a tick on the checklist of your long-term to-dos.

For a highly creative and multitasking job like business coaching for entrepreneurs, I feel extrinsic motivators can never be effective. So much so that they can hinder growth and progress. Business coaching requires focus and 100% involvement. Without intrinsic motivators like passion for your job, or fondness for the d hustle, I don’t think anyone can thrive.

The takeaway

I feel motivation is subjective. Sometimes intrinsic factors may not be as effective. It depends upon you and how you perceive motivation. Nonetheless, the proven facts and science of motivation proves that intrinsic motivation is the long-term stimulation that keeps the spirits high and boosts productivity.

Ask yourself, what brings you to work every day? Is it your passion for business coaching, or financial benefits? I urge you to ask these questions because it helps you get clarity and answers.

Coaches! Take A Breather

As a coach, you have a lot on your plate. Extended sessions, enrolments, one-on-one sessions, and the
list goes on. However, there are moments when you can feel so swamped by the pressure that it leads
to being uninspired overall. You get frustrated and aggravated over petty matters because coaching
takes a lot of your zest, and at times, it can be highly unforgiving. These issues stem from the stigma
around coaches; you are supposed to be at your best game all the time. It is humanly impossible to be
the best version of ourselves, and the consequences of such lofty expectations are harmful.

As a coach, it’s not always a sunny day. Some days you want to block out the world and stay in your
pajamas, but the others make you wonder with gratitude. Contrary to this notion, coaches are
envisioned as larger-than-life individuals. The truth is that coaches do not have their batteries full
every part of the day, and they can’t be impeccable listeners, motivators, or guides 24/7.

The inherent qualities of coaches can be shriveled, and it’s normal. Before being a coach, you are a
human being. All the goodness can be sidelined because you need a breather. The expectations and the
to-do list will be there, but pause and think: Is it fair to put that much pressure on yourself? Despite
everything, is this okay to burden yourself with unrealistic benchmarks?

Being a coach means you are in a profession where caring is part of the parcel. The job profile involves
helping others resolve their problems and perform better in their professional life. However, this job can
be emotionally and physically draining, leading to compassion fatigue or burnout.

Be Aware

When actively working as a coach, it is crucial to be mindful. Your health and well-being are essential.
Watch out for any symptoms of compassion fatigue. If you need external help to combat your issues,
seek help. Keeping tabs on yourself means being dedicated to your work, clients, and responsibilities.

You can make notes or set score benchmarks for your well-being. I read somewhere that setting scores
for your emotional health can be beneficial. For example, if you feel slightly irritated, record a score of 1
or 2. In case of score proliferation, you can seek help before matters deteriorate.

Self-Care

It is essential to take care of yourself before taking on the world. Everything is better when you are
healthy and happy. Self-care is necessary, not a luxury. It is not a selfish deed to take time out for
yourself. Coaching is a caring profession, and if you are not well, it will be impossible to accomplish
your job effectively. Everyone has an interpretation of self-care. However, it would help if you started
with the basics.

Work on your sleep schedule, maintain a healthy sleep cycle, eat well, and exercise regularly. You can
also set a time frame for self-care therapy; for instance, you take out time from your busy routine every
weekend and go for a retreat. Moreover, if you are pressuring yourself with work, try to get help for
chores. Anything that makes your life easier and healthy is self-care.

Prioritize your me-time

Work-life balance is everything. You can quickly get wrapped up in your never-ending work assignments,
leading to isolation. This can lead to many mental health issues, including depression, loneliness,
anxiety, etc. You have to take control of your activities and prioritize spending time with your close-knit
circle, including friends and family. Keeping up with your social connections can keep many
psychological problems at bay.

Your me-time is when you keep all your work priorities aside and spend time with the people you want
to. It can be a long conversation with a friend, a family dinner, taking a walk with your partner, or
anything that makes you relaxed. Improper social interactions can be very hazardous. Try to maintain a
healthy balance between your work and personal life. It is the key to remaining productive and efficient.

Develop Productive Habits

When you have an active career, there is a lot on your mind. It gets challenging to relax and get rid of all
those extra thoughts. There is constant pressure to be at your A-game, which can be stressful.
Developing a productive habit or hobby can be an excellent way to blow the steam off. It gives you a
safe passageway to relax and do something that makes you feel happy. Last year, I started gardening. I
renovated my backyard and turned it into a beautiful corner. Apart from the rewarding feeling, I
improved my overall well-being.

You can sit down and consider the things that make you happy. Write them down on paper, and decide
the one you can incorporate into your busy life. For example, you can start reading. One page a day
could be significant. It is up to you.

The boom of the coaching industry
The traditional management approaches are no longer capable of generating desirable results, and companies no longer choose to waste their investment on an inefficient methodology. There is a undersupply of skilled employees in several industries and it has accentuated the need to invest in coaching. With a rapid change in the external environment of the business and an increased amount of restructuring, mergers, and downsizing, there is a vacuum of growth. Significant changes in the internal systems, such as new technologies being introduced in the companies, have made the employees more insecure about their place in the workplace. There is an increased workplace pressure to be resourceful, perform well, and consolidate teams that have pressed the implication of coaching in professional settings.

From transitioning roles, switching careers to external support for the leaders, coaching has proved to be a result-driven and effective procedure. What led to coaching being the second fast-growing industry in the world?

The technology takeover
The close competitor of the coaching industry, information technology, has revolutionized the way businesses operate. With the advancement of information technology, most of the manual work has been taken over by computers. Technology has made things easier for business owners but it has caused a lot of distress for the managers, and employees. There is a sense of insecurity because of the magnificent job displacement. Many employees are being replaced as technology has automated their position in the workplace.

It is a well-proven fact that soon computers will take over all the jobs in the world, and it has developed room for coaching. One of the major tasks of a business coach is to accommodate the changing environments, systems, and technologies within a workplace to the managers, employees. For example, if a business is looking to adopt software into its system to replace a traditional method of working, a business coach helps to make the transition easier and smoother. Hence, with the advancement of technology, the need for coaching also evolved.

Effective crisis management
Technological and social advancement has led to a fresh array of problems for business owners. Crisis helps the business owners to reflect on the redundant practices and plan the future strategies of the organization. As the systems change, there is an emerging need to adapt and execute effective crisis management. Professional coaching brings a new perspective to crisis management. During a time of crisis, business owners tend only to look at the situation to solve it for the time being, however, a professional coach develops a strategy that not only resolves the problem but also prepares for the future. Looking ahead and formulating a groundwork for the organization is the prime focus of professional coaching.

A professional coach prepares the managers and employees for crisis leadership through effective practices. Therefore, more organizations are opting to invest in coaching services.

Identifying the blind spots
A business coach provides insight into the blind spots and helps the organizations to practically reflect on their issues. Business owners have progressively engaged coaches to determine the problems that hold back their progress. It is very common to overlook the issues and a business coach brings in an objective point of view to pinpoint them.

Business coaches are usually expert entrepreneurs who have experience in the field and understand minor details of it. They look at the blind spots with much more clarity than the involved parties. Through evaluations, the blind spots are identified and rectified.

Enhanced productivity
The organizational transformation comes with its challenges and the need for strategic guidance is undeniable. Professional coaching empowers the employees to cope with the changes in the organizational structure. Coaching is an essential method to enhance productivity through different tools and techniques. Effective Traits to Look for In a Business Coach
Effective Traits to Look for In a Business Coach

Business coaching is an integral tool to maximize your companys potential. Whether you are a small business owner, or an aspiring entrepreneur, running a business can be an overwhelming undertaking, especially without any external outlook. However, business coaches are corporate leaders with extensive knowledge and skills to provide feedback based on their experience. They provide valuable advice and formulate effective strategies and business plans. At some point, every entrepreneur needs a business coach.

Despite the proven benefits of business coaching, many entrepreneurs still consider it to be havoc of resources but finding success on your own in the corporate world is nearly impossible. A business coach is almost mandatory to thrive in a competitive entrepreneurial environment. Before you start working with a business coach, you should research some qualities to distinguish their credibility in the field.

Experience
Undoubtedly, the most important factor to consider is the experience of a business coach in your industry. As a thumb rule, more experience means more credibility. You should research their previous work profile, including the number of clients they have dealt with, and their success rate while coaching them. Apart from this, you should also analyze their experience in the business arena. Your coach must have insights into the nuts and bolts of the business world.

A perfect candidate for a business coach should be accomplished and learned; they should have faced failure and managed to succeed. If the coach has failed in their work field and managed to come out of the crisis, they would have the perfect experience to guide you in the best direction by avoiding blindsides and mistakes.

The best practice is to dig for details. You can ask for testimonials, reviews, or references. The work profile is substantial evidence of the coach’s abilities. Google is a reliable platform where you can search for the candidate’s previous mentees and their reviews.

Attitude
As a business coach, it is integral to have certain behavioral qualities to succeed. The ideal attitude cannot be achieved overnight and it requires a lot of patience. A business coach is mandated to be modest, patient, persistent, and enthusiastic. These qualities are unavoidable and if you spot these in a candidate, you must lock them down for collaboration.

Through experience in the business arena, a business coach will be mindful of the intricacies that an entrepreneur undergoes daily as they have been in your shoes. It is all about balanced behavior and a fine ability to judge the circumstances to see the wider picture. Moreover, they should be a great listener. If you can talk to someone about your problems and feel lighter, they are the ideal fit for your entrepreneurial journey. Listening is the first step to developing effective solutions for your problems, therefore, keep a keen eye for great listeners while determining your business coach.

Some key qualities of a business course include dependability and efficiency; it is all about setting reliable communication with a coach so that you can address your business issues effectively. If the coach is willing to share their expertise without holding back, it is a good sign. Radical clarity is crucial to this alliance.

Accessibility
The most valuable component of business coaching is effective communication. You should be able to reach out to the coach without any hesitation, or worry. In the beginning, you should ask them significant questions about the time they are offering you, and how they will customize the program according to your needs. If they offer less time and do not seem flexible enough to mend the program, reconsider your choice. Time is everything and they must be willing to invest their time with you for effective evaluation of your business crises, and elaboration of future strategies.

The perfect candidate should be able to connect with you. It is a relationship that is based on collaboration; therefore, they should be equally involved in your problems. You should be able to work up a schedule and communicate easily. Before making a call, you should discuss the details, and determine the footing of your association.

Accountability
One of the key features of business coaching is the presence of an individual that holds you accountable for all your decisions, and strategies. Once you have locked down a chronological plan for your business with the help of a coach, it is their responsibility to keep a firm eye on your execution. If the plan is not in action, an ideal business coach will hold you accountable, and pull you back on track.

Essentially, the goal of business coaching is to ensure your best performance. The foundation of the association is genuine interest. In case of a loss, a business coach will not let you be demotivated for a long time. They will help you get back on your feet, and correct the mistakes that led to the loss. It is a part of their job to be your constant companion through every failure, and success, and to teach you helpful strategies to avoid any pitfalls in the future.

An expert and teacher
The best quality of a business coach is their expertise in their field and teaching skills. As an entrepreneur, you are looking to learn the ways to beat the odds and find applicable solutions for your issues, therefore, a business coach needs to be a teacher. It is an essential quality that you should be looking for in the first meeting with the candidate. You should focus on the way they treat you, what their values are, and how much aptitude they bring to the table. One of the preferred ways to determine the expertise of your candidate is to check whether they have been giving lectures, written a book, have a certain popularity, or anything that brings their personality to the light.

Moreover, you should be mindful of overestimation by the candidates. Nobody can be an expert in everything. Hence, try to ignore the candidates who seem to be "jack of all trades, master of none.

An inspirational figure
A business coach must be able to change your mindset if it is not beneficial for your business in the long run. They should be able to inspire you in more than one way and bring a positive perception to the table to ensure your business growth. By working on your strength and weaknesses, they should be able to push you to work on your blindsides. Motivating you is one of the fundamental responsibilities of a business coach, and you should analyze this trait in the first meeting. If you feel driven and motivated by their interaction, you should not have any confusion about their abilities. Their previous mentees and current employees can also be a reliable resource to test out their motivational skills.

Keep in mind, that perception is predominant, and action is ultimate. An ideal business coach should be able to incite action through a proper mindset shift. If you are stuck somewhere, they should take the lead, and modify your mentality for good.

Guarantees solutions
The ultimate goal of hiring a business coach is to gain an objective view of your problems and acquire effective solutions. Therefore, the candidate needs to be a problem solver. Coaching is not about discussing the problem; it is about finding solutions. The candidate should have the ability to set in quickly and provide insightful advice to tackle the issues at hand. There is no room for wasting any time when you have a business to run. To determine this trait, you must ask the right questions. Keenly observe how they handle accountability and deduce solutions. If they get frustrated in the first meeting, you should rethink your selection .

Why is Team Coaching effective?

Why is Team Coaching effective?
Why is Team Coaching effective?

For the teams to perform well and execute effectively, it is essential to cultivate a sense of teamwork spirit for the organization’s greater good.

The significant difference between one-on-one and team coaching is that the latter emphasizes results, and team coaching implicates the “whole” and facilitates learning in a group.

The method is distinct to accommodate the context of the team and their long-term goals.

Why is team coaching effective?

For many years, individual coaching was considered to be the most relevant strategy for boosting the productivity of an organization. However, there has been a huge shift in the last 10 to 15 years.

The organizations formed and banked on teams to generate desirable outcomes to drive better results and increase productivity. Consequently, more teams are formed and given authority. Teams accomplish objectives with efficiency and determination because the power of collaboration is unmistakable.

As more teams have emerged within organizations, the major challenge is to drive the ultimate potential of the group for the fulfillment of the goals. Having outstanding, competent individuals on the team is worthless if they cannot collaborate effectively within a team.

Many factors, including toxic culture, ineptitude to cooperate, poor communication, can contribute to the team’s underperformance.

Team coaching combats the issue of underachievement by exacting the idea of “whole” and employing techniques to enhance the group’s performance.

Benefits of Team Coaching

Team coaching is the finest type of coaching because the outlay of new knowledge does not drive the results. A sustainable change is achieved through the modified behaviour of the individuals as a team.

Eliciting the collaborative spirit, developing a proper communication strategy, enhancing cogency are some of the main accomplishments of team coaching. With different approaches and techniques, we build awareness among the team, which drives desirable outcomes.

With team coaching, every individual is empowered to grow and learn. The modified behaviours are integrated through different practices and strategies. Every member of the group has diverse qualities that are highlighted and refined.

The group gains the confidence to ask questions and provide feedback. Interpersonal skills are polished, and deep-rooted trust is ingrained among the individuals to form a productive team. Team coaching builds trust and confidence for them to implement effective collaboration.

Team coaching specifically benefits the organizations and creates an environment for learning. Passionate individuals cannot drive results, and the context of teamwork produces results. In organizations, the bottom line is influenced the most by team coaching.

The benefits are not just financial; efficient evolution of teams improves the organization’s functionality and promotes entrepreneurial creativity among the individuals.

Conflict resolution becomes more manageable. When the organizations develop teams, there are many individuals involved, and therefore, there is a high risk of workplace conflict.

Team coaching is an effective technique to improve communication and resolve conflicts before impacting overall productivity. We work with the teams and distinguish a way for people to work together despite professional disagreements.

Conclusion

The key to building a successful and productive team is to incite a sense of shared vision and collective accomplishment. Many talented individuals fail to perform within a team setting; there is a gap between what they are capable of and their accomplishments.

Team coaching is a prominent method to equip individuals to collaborate and work towards a single goal. We optimize the skills and talents of the team to drive evident results.

It’s no secret that business coaching for entrepreneurs and professionals is highly effective. Many famous business owners will agree that coaching helped them achieve their milestones. Despite having access to the best resources in the world and sitting at the helm of a tech giant, Schmidt needed a coach.

According to a survey conducted by Hay Group, almost 40% of Fortune 500 companies pursue business coaching for the training of their executives.

A similar 2001 study by Manchester Inc. found that entrepreneur coaching boosted returns by as much as 5.7 returns. Approximately 53% of business owners reported a boost to their productivity.

LFG

400 million dollars vs. 30million dollars for the same work!

I was appalled to see LFG on CNN this week. Women’s teams are being paid less for literally the same work as the men’s team. Despite having a splendid success haul, U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team is still fighting for their right to equal pay against USSF. I feel the discrimination against the women’s soccer team is not just ridiculous, but it’s also regressive.

LFG is a 2021 American documentary film broadcasting the U.S. women’s national team’s ongoing fight for equal pay, as told by Megan Rapinoe, Jessica McDonald, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara, Sam Mewis and others. LFG is an acronym for let’s fuc** go. These types of moral and legal battles are exhausting, and one can feel demotivated easily, but I salute these women for taking a firm stand for so many years.

The women’s team has won several world cups, Olympic gold medals, and yet they are not given a basic right to acquire equal pay as their counterparts. I was surprised to see that the women’s team generates more money for USSF than the men’s team, but they are still denied a fair plea. In this time when marginalization of female professionals is highly opposed, such an incident is a reminder of a deep-rooted mindset.

The USSF, in their lawsuit, has claimed that the men’s team requires a higher level of skill, strength, and speed. It’s beyond my understanding; how’s it possible? The same game, competition, and level, the women still don’t deserve the same compensation. It’s a backward idea that is blatantly defended in the court. However, I want to add my voice to this larger cry for justice. The women’s soccer team should be given their due, equal pay.

The federal judge, in 2020, ruled in favour of USSF, but major players like Rapinoe are fighting viciously to acclaim their rights. She said, “Obviously, the point that I feel like the judge missed was that we never had the opportunity to agree to the same deal.”

In a nutshell, it’s yet another disturbing incident contributing to the constant pressing of women’s voices on a global scale. I sincerely hope a productive result comes out of this protracted battle.

Zaryab Mehmood: Mountaineer Breaks Barriers

I have always been an advocate of ‘breaking the barriers .’ I recently came across a wonderful Pakistani woman challenging all the odds to fulfill her dreams. Zaryab Mehmood, a young woman from Sialkot, Pakistan, is a breath of fresh air amid the chaos for the country’s reputation. She is a traveller, trekker, and entrepreneur.

“Dare to live the life you’ve always wanted!

Three years ago, she got on an inspirational journey to achieve her dream of exploring Pakistan. Apart from the mainstream tourist locations, she explored the hidden gems of the country as well. Back then, she was a student, but her passion drove her to pursue her goals, and today, she is a proud owner of a travelling company.

Despite stretching out her roots in the field, she is still committed to trekking. Recently, she ventured K2 basecamp. She crossed Gondogoro, which is at an altitude of 5600 meters. The challenges of trekking such a tremendous peak come with its challenges, and they are not untold. There are many risks involved in attempting such unpredictable peaks, but nothing stopped Zaryab from pursuing her ambition, and I think that is simply outstanding. Coming from a conservative society, she could bypass the pressure of treading an unchartered territory and created a mark for herself in the industry within three years. Running a successful travelling company in Pakistan is an applaudable achievement too. Girls like her are inspirational.

Apart from fulfilling her dream, she is also helping other girls to follow their dreams. She is working to spread awareness about the safety of travelling in Pakistan. Being a single girl from Sialkot (a small town), she has explored most of the country on her own, and it is her mission to inspire other women to do it too.

Zaryab rightly says that “the only regret in life is the chances that we didn’t take.”

Zaryab Mehmood is the true face of women’s empowerment, and I’m highly impressed by her accomplishments. However, she is not alone.

Thre country has produced some exceptional achievers, and they have accomplished great things. One of the phenomenal names from the travelling industry is Samina Baig. She is a high-altitude mountaineer from Pakistan. In 2013, she summited Mount Everest at the age of 21. She is the first Pakistani Muslim woman who had successfully done all Seven Summits before she turned 23.

It is remarkable how talented, brave, passionate Pakistani women are, and talents like Zaryab and Samina are only taking things forward.
